Pressure Reflex

The 8 Pressure Reflexes

The 8 Pressure Reflexes are the eight versions of you that can take over under pressure. They were named by Deano Sutter, founder of Pressure Reflex™ Leadership Training System. Each one protects something different. Everyone experiences them, and most people have one or two that show up far more than the rest.

Who takes over when the pressure hits?

Not every Pressure Reflex looks the same. Some push back. Some go quiet. Some stay very, very busy.

What they share is the job. Each one is an emergency responder, built for a real threat. When your alarm goes off, it calls one in, and that responder does its job at all costs.

When the threat is real, that's exactly what you need. Something is charging at you, and The Defender stands its ground.

But most of the time, the threat isn't real. Feedback. A disagreement. A missed number. A friend who hasn't texted back. None of it can actually hurt you. Your alarm reads it as danger anyway, and a responder shows up at full force.

That's a false alarm. The moment is real. The danger isn't.

Which Pressure Reflexes are yours?

Everyone experiences all eight at some point. Put enough pressure on anyone and any of them can take over.

But most people have one or two that show up far more than the rest. Those are your predominant Pressure Reflexes. They are the ones that take over first, usually in the moments that cost you the most.

And they rarely travel alone. Your primary Pressure Reflex often brings one or two others with it. The Defender takes over, and The Overexplainer is right behind it.

Knowing yours is where the work starts.

Why it matters

People don't see the pressure. They experience your reactions.

One reaction is a moment. Repeated, it becomes how people describe you. Defensive. Hard to reach. Always busy. Never says no.

Your repeated reactions become your reputation.

"...never realized how prolific these programs from the past were."

Questions people ask

What are the 8 Pressure Reflexes?

The Defender, The Overexplainer, The People Pleaser, The Fortress Builder, The Short-Circuiter, The Dodger, The Ringmaster and The Performer.

Which Pressure Reflexes do I have?

All eight, at some point. Most people have one or two predominant Pressure Reflexes that show up far more than the rest, and a primary one often brings one or two others with it.

Are Pressure Reflexes bad?

No. Each one is an emergency responder, and when the threat is real it's exactly what you need. The problem is false alarms, moments that feel dangerous but can't actually hurt you, like feedback, disagreement or uncertainty.

Are the Pressure Reflexes personality types?

No. A personality type describes who you are. A Pressure Reflex describes who takes over under pressure. It was trained, so it can be retrained.

Who created the 8 Pressure Reflexes?

Deano Sutter, founder of Pressure Reflex™ Leadership Training System. He trains leaders to change how they react under pressure, because repeated reactions become reputation.
